This document contains both the canonical English language translation of the mission statement and other relevant statements, as well as the corresponding parts of the official Netherlands language version from the statutes as passed by notary firm Van Doorne on October 21st 2016. Note that when an unintended difference between the two versions would be questioned in a court of law, the original version would overrule the interpretation made during the translation. Given the actual contents, it would seem exotic that such an event would ever take place.
Mission of [The Commons Conservancy]
The English translation of the relevant part of the original statutes is:
Article 1. The foundation strives for a fair and balanced global information society in which individuals can collectively scrutinise, reconfigure and improve upon the technology and informational resources they depend on; and to make that technology and those resources secure, reliable, transparent and inclusive and to enable human innovation at the widest possible scale, with the express intention to strenghten the individual in their humanity and to enable them to participate in all facets of modern life -- whether social, cultural, economic, private etc. -- under conditions of their own choosing, and in full understanding of and control over its workings, and all that relates to the beforementioned or could be beneficial ot it, all in the broadest sense of the word.
The official (Netherlands language) version from the statutes is:
Artikel 1. De stichting heeft ten doel een eerlijke en gebalanceerde informatiesamenleving waarin individuen in staat zijn om de technologie en informatiemiddelen waarvan ze afhankelijk zijn alleen of samen met anderen te onderzoeken, in te stellen en te verbeteren; en om die technologie en informatiemiddelen veilig, betrouwbaar, transparant en inclusief te laten zijn en daarmee de menselijke innovatiekracht op de grootst denkbare schaal mogelijk te maken, met de uitdrukkelijke intentie om het individu in zijn menswaardigheid te versterken en in staat te stellen om te participeren in alle facetten van het moderne leven - op onder meer sociaal, cultureel, economisch en persoonlijk vlak - onder zijn eigen voorwaarden, en met volledige begrip en controle over de werking ervan, en al hetgeen met vorenstaande verband houdt of daartoe bevorderlijk kan zijn, alles in de ruimste zin van het woord.
Approach
The English translation of the relevant part of the original statutes is:
Article 2. The Stichting [The Commons Conservancy] aims to achieve its goal, among others, by endurably making available and promoting free and open technology and content, and all that is necessary or deemed relevant to make full (re)use of that technology and content at the largest possible scale in a safe and responsible way, including making available everything required to further develop these at ones personal discretion and to share the outcome freely and without limitations with everyone, and further more all that is related directly or indirectly or could be beneficial, all in the broadest sense of the word and befitting the starting points of transparency and openness.
The official (Netherlands language) version from the statutes is:
Artikel 2. De stichting tracht haar doel te bereiken, onder meer door het wereldwijd duurzaam beschikbaar maken en bevorderen van vrije en open technologie en informatiemiddelen, en al hetgeen nodig is of relevant wordt geacht om deze zaken op een zo groot mogelijke schaal op een veilige en verantwoorde manier te kunnen (her)gebruiken, inclusief het beschikbaar stellen van al hetgeen nodig is om deze zaken naar eigen inzicht verder door te ontwikkelen en het resultaat ervan vrijelijk en zonder beperkingen met eenieder te delen, en voorts al hetgeen met een en ander rechtstreeks of zijdelings verband houdt of daartoe bevorderlijk kan zijn, alles in de meest ruime zin van het woord en passend bij de uitgangspunten van transparantie en openheid.
Financial considerations
[The Commons Conservancy] by design has no concept of profit or even money, even though it aims to be recognised as an "Algemeen Nut Beogende Instelling" (= a recongnised Public Benefit Organisation, according to article 5b of the "Algemene wet inzake rijksbelastingen" of the law of The Netherlands.

Article 3. The stichting aims to serve the public interest and not the making of profit.
